High Museum | Photo by Atlanta Ga TodayPopular exhibitions at Atlanta’s High Museum of Art in April include pop culture contemporary artists, Mexican moderism, and inspired jewelry creations.

Featured exhibits are Aaron Curry; Katharina Grosse; Gogo: Nature Transformed; and Frida & Diego: Passion, Politics and Painting.

The High Museum is not only a world-class attraction but an Atlanta Institution that inspires the soul. In addition to the current exhibits, take some time to tour the permanent collections and special exhibitions.

This major exhibition of work by Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera features some of the best examples of art from two central figures of Mexican moderism. The High will be the only U.S. venue for this exhibition, which features more than 80 paintings and works on paper and more than 50 photographs of the couple.

This exhibition explores the role the natural environment plays in shaping the jewelry and home wares created by Georgia designer Gogo Ferguson. Cumberland Island plays a formative role in Ferguson’s work as both her home-base and her main source of inspiration.

Screening in conjunction with Frida & Diego: Passion, Politics, and Painting, this spring film series brings together the work of two extraordinary visionaries who have artfully re-imagined Mexico on the big screen: Golden Age cinematographer Gabriel Figueroa and contemporary art cinema director Carlos Reygadas.

Break Out ArTLabs for Teens
Tuesday through Friday, April 9 through April 12, 2013; 10:00 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Teens can spend four days in one of two ArTLabs – Fashions of Frida or DJ School. In Fashions of Frida, teens will create a collection inspired by Frida Kahlo and present it at a runway fashion show. In DJ School, teens will explore Latin American folk and pop music and create a soundtrack for the Fashions of Frida show.

Every Sunday, February 17 through May 12, 2013; 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.
This event invites families to explore Frida & Diego: Passion, Politics, and Painting with the High’s bilingual college ambassadors, or “guías de aventura de arte.” These ambassadors will guide families on an interactive gallery tour, followed by a fun art-making workshop.

Named after the renowned African-American artist and art scholar, the annual David C. Driskell Prize recognizes a scholar or artist in the early stages of his or her career whose work makes an original and important contribution to the field of African-American art or art history.

Inside the Studio of Diego Rivera Lecture
Thursday, April 18, 2013; 7:00 p.m.
From 1934 to 1940, Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera lived in an avant-garde complex designed by their friend, the architect and painter Juan O’Gorman. The abode included not one, but two houses, one for each artist. At this lecture, Ms. Monserrat Sanchez Soler, Director of the Museo Casa Estudio Diego Rivera y Frida Kahlo in Mexico City, will discuss this creative space, as well as the studio practices of the artists, particularly touching on Rivera.

Georgia-based designer Ferguson and Sarah Schleuning, the High’s Curator of Decorative Arts and Design, will discuss Ferguson’s evolving practice of creating intricate jewelry and decorative objects inspired by her love for the beauty of Cumberland Island.
