Why The Hawks Are Doomed

I feel sorry for those of you who had high hopes for the Atlanta Hawks this year. Don’t get fooled by the hype, the Hawks are doomed this season.
It obvious from their recent performance the team is going nowhere fast. Over the last 10 games the Hawks are 3 and 7. After getting blown out by the Boston Celtics at home the Hawks come away with an embarrassing loss to the Nets.
The Atlanta Hawks starting rotation consists of Mike Bibby, Joe Johnson, Marvin Williams, Josh Smith, and Al Horford. Let’s take a closer look at the Hawks to see what’s going on. Mike Bibby at 32 would make a fine guard coming off the bench but his legs are too slow for a starting point guard in the NBA. Marvin Williams is struggling big time and is just 3 for 17 from three point land. Josh Smith is one of the best defensive players and finishers in the league. However, management has him playing out of position at power forward instead of small forward. That leads to Al Horford who also has to play out of position at center. Horford makes a fine power forward, but asking him to play center is ridiculous.
Joe Johnson was signed to an unbelievable 119 million dollar contract in the off season. The Hawks are also shelling out $10 million this year to Jamal Crawford. He is another shooting guard coming off the bench. That’s 26 million tied up into one position!
I have nothing against Joe Johnson, he is a fine two guard. I do have a big problem with the Atlanta Hawks management. How on earth do you rationalize player who did little in the playoffs to a $119 million dollar contract over 6 years. Joe is a fine shooter but far from an elite player who can create on his own.
Atlanta Ga Today believes the Hawks need a quality point guard (think Chris Paul) and a good big man to contend. Until then Atlanta Hawks fans need to settle for little more than an average NBA team.
