Atlanta Happenings – The St. Regis Atlanta, an unparalleled in-town resort located in the elegant enclave of Buckhead, is pleased to announce a five-course Truffle Dinner featuring award-winning La Spinetta wines and live jazz. The Truffle Dinner presents guests and locals with a taste of the elusive white truffle – the world’s most expensive food, otherwise known as “white diamonds” – and commemorates St. Regis Hotels & Resorts’ deep-rooted history with jazz.

Taking place on Monday, November 15 in Paces 88 American Bistro, the hotel’s signature restaurant featuring an elegant yet relaxed atmosphere, the Truffle Dinner is a part of The St. Regis Atlanta’s signature wine dinner series.

“We are delighted to present this five course Truffle Dinner, bringing one of the world’s most sought-after delicacies from Italy to the Southeast,” said Simon Rusconi, general manager. “St. Regis has a history of offering unparalleled experiences and the Truffle Dinner is no exception. The evening will couple exceptional cuisine and wine with live jazz, making for a truly memorable experience.”

The Truffle Dinner will include black and white truffles, revered as a delicacy with near-mystical powers — at least since Roman times. White truffles are valued for the intoxicating potency of their aroma and the distinctive but difficult to describe flavors they elicit. Among the dishes that will feature white truffles are: Porcini Mushroom and Parmesan Risotto with Shaved White Truffles; Pistachio and White Truffle Milk Shake; White Truffle and Hazelnut Macaroons.

The St. Regis Atlanta will also serve truffles as a part of dishes including Robiola and Wild Mushroom Flatbread with Caramelized Onions and Truffles; Candy Stripe Beets with Goat’s Milk Cheese and Truffle Honey; Duo of Roasted Chestnut Soup with Espresso Foam and Black Truffles; Quail Egg in Brioche with Smoked Bacon and Truffle Salsa; Grass Fed Steak Tartare with Truffle Tapenade; Braised Veal Osso Bucco with Foie Gras; Black Truffle Gnocchi; Pear and Ginger Cake with Port Wine Poached Pears and Truffle Honey.

The truffle has been imbued with, and sought after for, a wide variety of delightful attributes over the centuries. Always elusive of precise description, the truffle experience — as much an experience of aroma as of taste — has been described as everything from “intoxicating” to “aphrodisiacal.”

The ancient Greeks and Romans were both enthralled and mystified by the truffle’s peculiar characteristics — no leaves, no flowers, no obvious reproductive apparatus (and therefore not subject to cultivation), seemingly generating spontaneously four to eight inches underground, and virtually unharvestable by humans alone. As early as 300 B.C. the great naturalist Theophrastus, one of Aristotle’s most gifted students, wrote of his confusion at how to classify the strange tubers. The Romans, who ranked truffles along with oysters and thrushes as supreme delicacies, explained truffles’ propagation as the magical result of lightning strikes. It would take another 1500 years and the invention of the microscope before many of these ancient notions began to be dispelled.

In honor of these Italian delicacies, The St. Regis Atlanta will pair La Spinetta wines with each course. The award-winning wines derive from vineyards in Piedmont and Tuscany; vintages that will be served during the Truffle Dinner include La Spinetta “Toscana Vermentino” 2009, La Spinetta Barbera “Gallina” 2007, La Spinetta Barbera/Nebbiolo Monferato Rosso “Pin” 2005, La Spinetta “Il Gentile di Casanova” 2005, La Spinetta Barolo “Campe” 2004, and La Spinetta Moscato Passito. Live jazz performed by The Gary Land Band will complement the food and wine pairings, adding a sophisticated and lively energy to the exclusive evening.

Following dinner, attendees will be gifted Timeless is Modern, a limited edition jazz CD curated by jazz legend Wynton Marsalis and performed by Marsalis and the acclaimed Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. This musical ensemble was produced exclusively for the St. Regis brand and features 21 jazz standards.

“The St. Regis’ flagship, the iconic St. Regis New York, has played host to some of the finest jazz musicians since its opening over a century ago, and we are proud to continue the tradition by bringing jazz music to guests at The St. Regis Atlanta,” said St. Regis Global Brand Leader Paul James.

The five-course Truffle Dinner and La Spinetta wine pairing will take place on Monday, November 15 at The St. Regis Atlanta; 6 pm. reception in The Wine Room and 7 p.m. dinner in Paces 88. The cost is $150 per person.
